Swedish words 1–300: the “First words” band
The 300 most frequent words in Swedish are the skeleton of the language. They include the everyday verbs (vara, ha, gå), the most common pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and the handful of high-frequency nouns that appear on almost every page of Swedish text. Because these words repeat so often, you will encounter many of them dozens of times in a single short article — which makes this band the fastest place to build rock-solid recognition.
On Beeblio, every word in a text is colour-coded by its frequency band. When you read a text pinned to the First Words band (ranks 1–300), words outside that range are highlighted so you can spot the new vocabulary instantly, while the familiar high-frequency words fade into the background. This lets you practise the comprehensible-input principle: understanding most of a text while noticing — and gradually absorbing — the parts you do not yet know.
Frequency ranks on Beeblio come from the wordfreq corpus, a large, real-world collection of Swedish text. That means rank 1 is genuinely the most-used Swedish word across news, books, and the web — not a textbook editor's guess. Working through this band first gives you the most return on your study time before you move on to the 301–800 range and beyond.
300 Swedish words ranked 1–300 by frequency — the “First words” band. A learner who knows them can read texts pinned to this band with about 95% of the words already familiar.

Questions
How much Swedish text can I understand if I only know these 300 words?
The 300 most frequent Swedish words will not yet cover 80% of everyday text on their own — that milestone is reached closer to the 1,500-word level. However, these words form the grammatical glue of almost every sentence, so knowing them well means you can at least parse the structure of what you read, even when individual content words are still unfamiliar.
What kinds of words are in the 1–300 band?
You will mostly find function words — pronouns like <em>jag</em> (I), <em>du</em> (you), and <em>de</em> (they); prepositions like <em>på</em>, <em>med</em>, and <em>för</em>; conjunctions like <em>och</em> and <em>men</em>; and the core auxiliary and modal verbs. A smaller number of extremely common nouns and adjectives round out the band.
How do I use Beeblio to practise this specific band?
Open or paste any Swedish text and set your known-vocabulary level to 300. Beeblio will highlight every word ranked below 301 in a distinct colour, so you can focus your attention — and your dictionary look-ups — exactly where the new words are, while the top-300 words stay visually quiet in the background.
