Learn Danish by reading at your level

Reading is one of the fastest ways to build a lasting Danish vocabulary — but only if the texts you choose are close to your current level. Beeblio colour-codes every Danish word by how common it is, using frequency ranks drawn from the wordfreq corpus. Words in the top 300 get one colour, words between 300 and 800 get another, and so on through bands up to 12,000. At a glance, you can see exactly which words are holding you back and which ones you already own.

On this page you will find everything you need to read Danish at your level: a vocabulary test that places you in the right frequency band, a difficulty checker that analyses any Danish text before you commit to reading it, graded reading materials chosen to keep unknown words at a manageable level, and word lists you can study directly. Whether you are piecing together your first Danish sentences or pushing past the plateau into everyday fluency, the tools here are built around one simple idea — comprehensible input works.

Questions

How does Beeblio decide which Danish words are 'common'?

Every word is ranked by how often it appears across a large, real-world sample of Danish text, using the wordfreq corpus. Beeblio groups those ranks into bands — the top 300 words, then 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 — so you can see at a glance how frequent a word really is.

How many Danish words do I need to read comfortably?

The roughly 1,500 most frequent Danish words cover about 80% of everyday text, so that is a practical first target for comfortable reading. Moving into the 3,000- and 5,000-word bands will unlock most newspaper articles, novels, and everyday conversation.

Can I check whether a Danish text is right for my level before I start reading?

Yes — paste any Danish text into the Beeblio difficulty checker and it will highlight every word by frequency band, showing you what share of the text sits inside your current vocabulary. If too many words are unfamiliar, the graded reading library can help you find something better matched to where you are right now.
