Learn Hungarian by reading at your level
Hungarian looks daunting at first — the long compound words, the vowel harmony, the eighteen or so noun cases — but the same principle that helps learners of any language applies here too: if you read texts where you already know most of the words, you pick up the unfamiliar ones naturally. Beeblio colour-codes every Hungarian word by how common it is, using frequency data from the wordfreq corpus, so you can see at a glance exactly where the gaps in your vocabulary are.
The tools on this page work together. Check any Hungarian text's difficulty before you read it, browse frequency-ranked word lists organised into bands of 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000 and beyond, take a quick level test to find out where you stand, or dive straight into the graded reading library. The roughly 1,500 most frequent Hungarian words cover around 80% of everyday text, so even an intermediate vocabulary gets you surprisingly far.
Whether you are a complete beginner sounding out your first köszönöm or a B2 learner working through Hungarian news articles, Beeblio shows you the right place to start — and what to learn next.

Questions
How does Beeblio decide which Hungarian words are 'common'?
Every word is ranked by how often it appears across a large, real-world sample of Hungarian text using the wordfreq corpus. The ranks are then grouped into frequency bands — the first band covers the 300 most common words, the next reaches 800, then 1,500, and so on up to 12,000 — so the colour on any highlighted word tells you immediately how rare or everyday it is.
I find Hungarian grammar really hard. Will reading actually help?
Yes — and it's one of the best tools you have. Because Hungarian marks so much grammar on the word itself (through suffixes for case, possession, tense and more), seeing the same root word in dozens of different forms in real context helps your brain absorb those patterns far more efficiently than drilling tables alone. Pair reading with Beeblio's word lists to make sure your core vocabulary is solid, and the grammar will start to feel more familiar over time.
What level do I need to be to use the Hungarian reading library?
The library includes texts graded from beginner to advanced, so there is something for every stage. Use Beeblio's difficulty checker to paste in any text and instantly see what percentage of words fall outside your current band — aim for texts where you know at least 90–95% of the words for comfortable, enjoyable reading.
