Learn Italian by reading at your level
Reading is one of the fastest ways to build an Italian vocabulary — but only when the text is close to your current level. Too easy and you switch off; too hard and you drown in unknowns. Beeblio solves this by colouring every word in a text according to how common it is in everyday Italian, using frequency ranks drawn from the wordfreq corpus. Words in your comfort zone appear in one colour; rarer words stand out so you know exactly what to focus on.
Beeblio organises Italian vocabulary into seven frequency bands: the 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 most common words. Once you know the top 1,500, you can understand roughly 80% of the Italian you encounter day to day — a hugely practical milestone. From there, every new band you climb opens up novels, newspapers, podcasts, and films that felt out of reach before.
On this page you will find Italian word lists by frequency band, a level test that shows where your vocabulary sits right now, a difficulty checker for any Italian text you paste in, and a growing library of graded readings. Pick the tool that suits where you are today and start reading.

Questions
How does Beeblio decide which Italian words are 'common'?
Every word is ranked by how often it appears across a large, real-world Italian corpus called wordfreq, which draws on books, news, and web text. The most frequent words get a low rank number; rare words get a high one. Beeblio groups these ranks into seven bands — 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 — so you always know exactly how rare a word is.
What level of Italian do I need before reading with Beeblio is useful?
Beeblio is helpful from the very beginning: even a beginner can paste in a simple text and see which words fall inside the top 300 or 800 — a ready-made study list. That said, most learners find it most powerful once they have a basic grounding, because colour-coded frequency lets you skip words you already know and zero in on the ones that will push you forward.
How many Italian words do I need to read real content comfortably?
Knowing the 1,500 most common Italian words covers around 80% of the words you will meet in everyday texts such as news articles and informal writing. That core vocabulary is a realistic short-term goal, and the Beeblio word lists and level test are designed to help you reach and confirm it.
