German words 1–300: the “First words” band
The 300 most frequent words in German form the bedrock of the language. This band — Beeblio calls it "First words" — covers the articles, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and a handful of high-frequency verbs and nouns that appear in virtually every sentence a German speaker writes or says. If you can recognise these words on sight, you already have a working skeleton for parsing real text.
Beeblio ranks every word using the wordfreq corpus, so the ordering reflects how often words actually appear across books, websites, and everyday writing — not a textbook editor's guess. Words in this band are highlighted in a distinct colour when you read on Beeblio, letting you see at a glance which words are old friends and which belong to higher bands that still need attention.
Reading texts pinned to the First Words band means the unknown words you meet sit just above this foundation — typically in the 301–800 range — so each session gives you comprehensible input without overwhelming you. Think of it as building a reading habit on ground that is already mostly solid.
300 German words ranked 1–300 by frequency — the “First words” band. A learner who knows them can read texts pinned to this band with about 95% of the words already familiar.

Questions
What kinds of German words are actually in the 1–300 band?
The vast majority are function words: definite and indefinite articles (der, die, das, ein), personal pronouns (ich, du, er, sie), prepositions (in, auf, mit, von), conjunctions (und, aber, dass), and common modal and auxiliary verbs (sein, haben, werden, können). A small number of very high-frequency nouns and adjectives — such as Jahr (year), gut (good), and Zeit (time) — also make the cut.
How much of a German text will I understand if I only know these 300 words?
Knowing the top 300 words gives you strong coverage of the most repeated tokens in a text, but because many of them are short grammatical words, you will still encounter a lot of unfamiliar content words. The real jump in comprehension comes as you extend your knowledge toward the 1,500-word mark, where the ~80% everyday-text coverage threshold sits.
How does Beeblio use this band when I choose a text to read?
When you pin a text to the First Words band, Beeblio colour-codes every word by its frequency rank, so words in the 1–300 range appear in one colour and less frequent words stand out clearly. This lets you focus your attention on the words just above your comfort zone rather than hunting through a sea of unknown vocabulary.
