German reading level test — 2 minutes, 24 words

This free test gives you a clear answer to a question every German learner has: which level of text can I actually read? You'll see 24 German words drawn from Beeblio's frequency bands — 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 most common words — and simply tick the ones you know. The whole thing takes about two minutes.

The words are ranked by real-world frequency using the wordfreq corpus, so they reflect the German you meet in news articles, novels, and everyday conversation, not textbook word lists. Because the ~1,500 most frequent German words cover roughly 80% of everyday text, even a mid-range result means you can follow a surprising amount of authentic material.

When you finish, Beeblio tells you which frequency band fits your current vocabulary and suggests reading material pitched at the right level — just challenging enough to keep you learning without losing you every other sentence.

How it works

You see 24 German words, from the most common down to rank 12,000, and say for each whether you know it. Knowing at least two thirds of a band's words passes that band; your level is the highest band passed. No account, two minutes.

The bands

  1. First words — the top 300 words
  2. Getting by — the top 800 words
  3. Everyday — the top 1,500 words
  4. Confident — the top 3,000 words
  5. Fluent reader — the top 5,000 words
  6. Advanced — the top 8,000 words
  7. Near-native — the top 12,000 words

Questions

How does ticking 24 words tell me my reading level?

The 24 words are spread across Beeblio's frequency bands, so your pattern of correct answers pinpoints where your passive recognition starts to break down. The band where you begin missing words consistently is the level just beyond your current comfort zone — and the band below it is where you can read fluently.

Should I count a word as known if I've seen it before but can't quite define it?

Tick it only if you'd understand it confidently in a sentence without stopping to think. If you have a vague feeling you've seen it but can't use it in context, leave it unticked — the test is most useful when you're honest, and it only takes two minutes to redo if you want to try again.

What do I do with my result once I have it?

Beeblio uses your band to recommend German texts where most words are already familiar to you, so you can pick up new vocabulary through context rather than constant dictionary look-ups. Reading regularly at that level — and nudging slightly above it — is one of the most effective ways to grow your vocabulary naturally.
