French words 1–300: the “First words” band
The 300 most frequent words in French are the skeleton of the language. Words like être, avoir, que, pas, and tout appear so relentlessly that you will meet them on almost every line of any French text you ever read. Learning this band means you stop stumbling over the words that hold sentences together and can start paying attention to the words that carry meaning.
Beeblio ranks every French word by frequency using the wordfreq corpus, then groups them into bands. The First Words band covers ranks 1–300. When you read a text pinned to this band, every word outside it is highlighted, so you can see at a glance what is already familiar and what still needs work. At this level most highlighted words will be common nouns and verbs just beyond the top 300 — still very learnable.
A good goal is to reach the point where the First Words band feels almost colourless — nearly nothing highlighted. At that stage you are ready to move up to the 800-word band and take on slightly richer texts with confidence.
300 French words ranked 1–300 by frequency — the “First words” band. A learner who knows them can read texts pinned to this band with about 95% of the words already familiar.

Questions
What kinds of words are in the French 1–300 band?
Mostly grammatical glue: articles (<em>le</em>, <em>la</em>, <em>les</em>), pronouns (<em>je</em>, <em>il</em>, <em>on</em>), prepositions (<em>de</em>, <em>en</em>, <em>dans</em>), and the most essential verbs (<em>être</em>, <em>avoir</em>, <em>faire</em>, <em>aller</em>). There are very few concrete nouns at this level because everyday objects are spread more evenly across the frequency list.
How much of a French text do these 300 words actually cover?
The top 300 words cover a large share of running text — not 80% on their own, but you will recognise them constantly because they repeat far more often than rarer words do. Reaching the ~1,500-word level is where coverage climbs to around 80% of everyday text, so the First Words band is an essential foundation for that journey.
How should I use Beeblio to practise this band?
Pick a short, simple French text — a children's story or a news brief aimed at learners — and open it in Beeblio with the band set to 300. Any word that lights up is outside your target range, so note it and look it up. Re-read the same text a few days later; if fewer words are highlighted, you are making real progress.
