Learn Finnish by reading at your level

Finnish has a reputation for being difficult, but the fastest route in is the same as for any language: read things you can almost understand, look up the gaps, and keep going. Beeblio makes that loop easy by highlighting every word according to how common it is — so you can instantly see whether a text is comfortable reading practice or a stretch too far.

Every Finnish word on Beeblio is ranked against the wordfreq corpus and sorted into frequency bands: the top 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 words. Once you know the most frequent 1,500 words, you can expect to recognise around 80% of the Finnish you meet in everyday text — a solid foundation for real reading.

On this page you can browse Finnish word lists by frequency band, take a level test to find out which band you're working in, check how hard any Finnish text is before you commit to it, and read graded passages pitched at your level. All in one place, all built around the words that matter most.

Questions

How does Beeblio decide which Finnish words are 'common'?

Word ranks come from the wordfreq corpus, a large, real-world collection of Finnish text. Each word is assigned a rank and placed into a frequency band — 300, 800, 1,500, and so on — so the colours you see always reflect genuine usage, not a textbook editor's guess.

How many Finnish words do I need to know before I can read real texts?

Knowing the most frequent 1,500 Finnish words gives you coverage of roughly 80% of everyday text, which is enough to start making sense of simple articles, short stories, and graded readers. You won't understand everything, but you'll understand enough to keep learning from context.

Can I use the difficulty checker on any Finnish text, or only texts in the Beeblio library?

You can paste any Finnish text into the difficulty checker — a news article, a recipe, a song lyric, anything you like. Beeblio will colour-code every word by frequency band so you can see at a glance how many unknown words you're likely to hit.
