Finnish text difficulty checker

Paste any Finnish text here — a news article, a recipe, a song lyric, a page from a novel — and Beeblio instantly breaks it down by word frequency. Each word is placed into one of seven bands, from the 300 most common Finnish words all the way out to 12,000+, so you can see at a glance how much of the text sits comfortably within what you already know and how much is genuinely new territory.

The tool is built on the wordfreq corpus, which ranks words by how often they actually appear in real Finnish writing. That means the numbers reflect the language as people use it, not just textbook lists. The roughly 1,500 most frequent Finnish words cover around 80% of everyday text, so if you're targeting that band, this checker helps you find reading material that sits right at your edge — challenging enough to stretch you, familiar enough to follow.

Use it to choose your next graded reader, size up a Finnish podcast transcript, or spot the handful of rare words blocking your comprehension. No account needed — just paste and go.

How it works

Paste a text in Finnish (up to 6,000 characters). Every word is looked up in a frequency list; for each band — the top 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000 and 12,000 words — you see the share of the text a learner at that band already knows. Comprehensible reading sits around 95–98% known: we call ≥97% easy, 92–97% just right, 85–92% hard, and below that too hard.

You also get the new words worth learning (unknown but common, in frequency order) and the rare words — names, jargon, typos — that no learner should stop for.

Questions

What do the frequency bands actually mean?

Each band groups words by how commonly they appear in Finnish text, ranked by the wordfreq corpus. Band 1 contains the 300 most frequent words, Band 2 covers words ranked 301–800, and so on up to 12,000+. A word in a lower-numbered band is one you're very likely to meet again soon; a word in the highest band is quite rare in everyday Finnish.

Does the checker handle Finnish word forms correctly?

Yes — Finnish is a heavily inflected language, so Beeblio looks up each word form against frequency data that accounts for real-world usage rather than just dictionary headwords. This means a word like "talossa" (in the house) is recognised and ranked appropriately rather than treated as unknown.

How do I use this to choose texts at the right level?

A good rule of thumb is to look for texts where 90–95% of the words fall within bands you already know — that's the comprehensible-input sweet spot. If the checker shows a large share of words in the top two or three bands, the text may be a stretch; if almost everything is in Band 1, you might want something more challenging.
