Learn Norwegian by reading at your level
Reading is one of the fastest ways to build Norwegian vocabulary — but only when the text is close to your level. Too easy and you stop noticing new words; too hard and you spend more time in the dictionary than in the story. Beeblio solves this by ranking every Norwegian word by how often it appears in real text, using the wordfreq corpus, so you always know exactly where a word sits in the language.
On this page you'll find everything you need to read your way to fluency in Norwegian. Check your current level with the vocabulary test, paste any Norwegian text into the difficulty checker to see whether it's a good fit, or browse the library of graded readings sorted by frequency band. Each band — 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 words — gives you a clear next target. Once you know the most frequent 1,500 Norwegian words, you can understand roughly 80% of everyday text, which is enough to start reading comfortably and learning the rest from context.

Questions
How does Beeblio decide which Norwegian words are 'common'?
Beeblio uses the wordfreq corpus — a large collection of real-world Norwegian text — to rank every word by how often it actually appears. A word in the top 300 turns up constantly in everyday reading; a word ranked 8,000 is much rarer. That frequency rank is what determines which colour band each word falls into.
What level of Norwegian do I need before reading starts to feel useful?
Most learners find that reading becomes genuinely useful once they know around 800–1,500 of the most frequent Norwegian words. At that point you can follow the gist of simple texts and pick up new words from context, which is exactly when Beeblio's graded library and difficulty checker are most valuable.
Can I use Beeblio to learn Norwegian from scratch?
Beeblio is best used alongside, rather than instead of, a beginner course — but you can start exploring Norwegian text from day one. Begin with the common-word lists for the top 300 words, use the level test to track your progress, and move into the graded readings as your vocabulary grows.
