Norwegian text difficulty checker

Paste any Norwegian text here and Beeblio will show you, word by word, how familiar it is likely to feel. Every word is ranked against the wordfreq corpus and sorted into frequency bands — 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 most common words — so you can see at a glance whether a passage sits comfortably in your reading zone or will stretch you hard.

The roughly 1,500 most frequent Norwegian words cover about 80% of everyday text, so if most of a passage falls inside that band you should be able to read it with only occasional look-ups. The checker highlights new words you might want to learn and flags rare words that are unlikely to be worth memorising yet, helping you choose texts that give you the right balance of familiar and new.

This tool is free and works for both Bokmål and Nynorsk. Paste a news article, a short story, a song lyric, or a textbook paragraph — anything you are curious about — and get an instant difficulty snapshot to guide your reading practice.

How it works

Paste a text in Norwegian (up to 6,000 characters). Every word is looked up in a frequency list; for each band — the top 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000 and 12,000 words — you see the share of the text a learner at that band already knows. Comprehensible reading sits around 95–98% known: we call ≥97% easy, 92–97% just right, 85–92% hard, and below that too hard.

You also get the new words worth learning (unknown but common, in frequency order) and the rare words — names, jargon, typos — that no learner should stop for.

Questions

Does the checker work for both Bokmål and Nynorsk?

Yes. Beeblio analyses Norwegian text regardless of which written standard you use, so you can paste Bokmål and Nynorsk passages interchangeably. Because the two standards share most of their core vocabulary, the frequency rankings are broadly reliable for both.

What do the frequency bands actually mean for my learning?

Each band represents the most common words in Norwegian up to that number — so the 300-band contains the 300 most frequent words, the 800-band the next 500, and so on. Words in the lower bands are ones a beginner must know; words in the higher bands are less common and can wait until you have a stronger foundation.

How should I use the results to choose a text to read?

A good comprehensible-input text is one where you already know most of the words. If the checker shows that around 80–90% of the words fall within your current band, the text is likely a strong choice. If a large share of words sits in bands well above your level, it may be worth saving that text for later or using it actively with a dictionary.
