Dutch reading level test — 2 minutes, 24 words

This quick test tells you which Dutch frequency band you can read comfortably — in about two minutes. You'll see 24 Dutch words drawn from across Beeblio's frequency bands (300 / 800 / 1,500 / 3,000 / 5,000 / 8,000 / 12,000 most common words). For each one, simply say whether you know it. There are no trick questions and no typing — just an honest self-check.

Your result is a reading band: for example, "top 1,500 words." That band is a useful landmark because the 1,500 most frequent Dutch words cover roughly 80% of everyday text — news articles, emails, simple novels. Knowing where you sit helps you choose texts that stretch you without overwhelming you, which is exactly what comprehensible input is about.

Beeblio uses word frequency ranks from the wordfreq corpus to colour-code every word in any text you read. The reading level test uses the same scale, so your result maps directly to what you'll see when you start reading. No account needed to take the test.

How it works

You see 24 Dutch words, from the most common down to rank 12,000, and say for each whether you know it. Knowing at least two thirds of a band's words passes that band; your level is the highest band passed. No account, two minutes.

The bands

  1. First words — the top 300 words
  2. Getting by — the top 800 words
  3. Everyday — the top 1,500 words
  4. Confident — the top 3,000 words
  5. Fluent reader — the top 5,000 words
  6. Advanced — the top 8,000 words
  7. Near-native — the top 12,000 words

Questions

How does Beeblio decide which band I belong to?

The 24 test words are spread across the frequency bands, so your pattern of known and unknown words points to the band where your recognition starts to drop off. That cut-off is your comfortable reading level — the band just below it is where you can read with ease, and the next band up is where you'll find useful challenge.

What if I know a word but only vaguely — should I count it?

Count it only if you'd recognise it mid-sentence without stopping to think. A hazy feeling of familiarity tends to overestimate your real reading comfort, so being slightly strict gives you a more useful result.

Can I retake the test after studying for a while?

Yes, and it's a good idea. Because the test takes only two minutes, retaking it every few weeks gives you a simple way to see your vocabulary growing across Beeblio's frequency bands.
