Ukrainian words 1–300: the “First words” band

The 300 most frequent words in Ukrainian are the bedrock of the language. They include the everyday building blocks you meet on every page and in every conversation — pronouns like він and вона, common verbs like бути and мати, prepositions, conjunctions, and the short connective words that hold sentences together. Beeblio ranks each word using the wordfreq corpus, so these 300 are not guesses — they are the words Ukrainian speakers actually use most.

Knowing this First Words band gives you a surprisingly strong foothold. The ~1,500 most frequent words of a language cover around 80% of everyday text, and this band gets you a fifth of the way there. In a Beeblio reader, any word outside your chosen band is highlighted, so you can paste in a Ukrainian article or story and immediately see which words lie beyond these 300 — and choose texts where almost everything is already familiar.

The best way to use this page is to read through the word list, note the ones you do not yet recognise, and then open a short Ukrainian text in the Beeblio reader pinned to the 1–300 band. The highlighting shows you your exact gaps without overwhelming you — comprehensible input at its most precise.

300 Ukrainian words ranked 1–300 by frequency — the “First words” band. A learner who knows them can read texts pinned to this band with about 95% of the words already familiar.

Questions

What kinds of words are in the Ukrainian 1–300 band?

Mostly grammar words and very high-frequency verbs and nouns: pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, auxiliaries, and common nouns like час (time) and рік (year). Content words that carry specific meaning start appearing more often from rank 300 onward.

How does Beeblio decide which Ukrainian words belong in this band?

Every word is ranked by how often it appears across a large, real-world Ukrainian text collection called the wordfreq corpus. The 300 words in this band are simply those with the highest usage frequency — rank 1 is the single most common word in the language.

Can I actually read Ukrainian texts with only 300 words?

You will recognise a significant share of tokens on the page, but 300 words alone is not enough to read comfortably without support. Use the Beeblio reader with the band pinned to 1–300: highlighted words show you exactly what lies beyond your current knowledge, helping you choose texts that are just one step above your level.
