Learn Ukrainian by reading at your level
Reading is one of the fastest ways to build a Ukrainian vocabulary, but only when the text is close to your level — challenging enough to stretch you, easy enough that you can follow the meaning. Beeblio uses word frequency to make that possible. Every Ukrainian word is ranked by how often it appears in real-world text, using the wordfreq corpus, and colour-coded into bands: the top 300, 800, 1,500, and beyond. That way you can see at a glance which words you already know and which ones are worth learning next.
The roughly 1,500 most frequent Ukrainian words cover around 80% of everyday text, so building that core vocabulary makes a dramatic difference to your reading fluency. Beeblio's level test checks where you stand across those frequency bands, and the difficulty checker tells you whether any Ukrainian article, news story, or passage is a good match for your current level. The graded reading library gives you a ready-made place to start.
Whether you are just beginning with the Cyrillic alphabet or pushing past the intermediate plateau, everything on this page is organised around one idea: read texts where most words are familiar, focus your attention on the ones that aren't, and your Ukrainian will grow steadily and naturally.

Questions
How does Beeblio decide which Ukrainian words are 'common'?
Every word is ranked by how frequently it appears across a large, varied collection of real Ukrainian text, using the wordfreq corpus. Words are then grouped into frequency bands — the top 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 — so you can focus on the words that will give you the biggest return for your study time.
What level of Ukrainian do I need to start reading with Beeblio?
You can start from day one. The graded reading library includes very short, high-frequency texts suitable for complete beginners, as well as longer and more complex pieces for intermediate and advanced learners. Take the level test if you are not sure where to begin — it will point you to texts where most words fall within your known range.
Can I check whether a Ukrainian text I found elsewhere is right for my level?
Yes — paste any Ukrainian text into the difficulty checker and Beeblio will highlight every word by frequency band, showing you instantly what proportion falls inside and outside your comfort zone. A good target is a text where around 95% of the words are already familiar to you, leaving just enough unknown words to learn without losing the thread of meaning.
