Learn Catalan by reading at your level

Catalan has around ten million speakers across Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, and Andorra, yet finding good reading material pitched at the right level can feel impossible. Beeblio changes that by ranking every Catalan word by how often it actually appears in real text, using the wordfreq corpus. Tap any word and you see instantly whether it belongs to the 300 most common words you probably already know, or whether it is sitting out near the 8,000-word band — genuinely rare.

The most frequent 1,500 words of Catalan cover roughly 80% of everyday text, so reaching that milestone is a concrete, achievable goal. Beeblio's frequency bands — 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 words — give you a clear map of the journey from beginner to advanced reader.

On this hub you will find the Catalan word frequency lists, a level test to see where you stand today, a difficulty checker to paste in any text and assess it instantly, and a growing library of graded readings chosen to sit just inside your reach.

Questions

How does Beeblio decide which Catalan words are 'common'?

Beeblio uses the wordfreq corpus, a large collection of real-world Catalan text, to rank every word by how frequently it appears. Words are then grouped into bands — 300, 800, 1,500, and so on — so you always know exactly how common or rare a word is relative to everyday usage.

I already speak Spanish. Will that help me with Catalan on Beeblio?

It will help a lot in practice, but Beeblio treats Catalan on its own terms: the frequency rankings are built from Catalan text, not derived from Spanish. That means words that are common in Catalan but less so in Spanish — and vice versa — are ranked accurately for the language you are actually learning.

What level of Catalan do I need before the graded readings make sense?

Even absolute beginners can use the difficulty checker to find texts where most words fall inside the top 300 or 800. Take the level test first to get your starting band, then filter the reading library to match — you can step up gradually as your vocabulary grows.
