Polish words 1–300: the “First words” band
The 300 most frequent words in Polish are the backbone of the language. They include the most common pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and everyday verbs — the small words that hold sentences together. Because these words appear constantly, recognising them instantly frees up your attention for the content words that actually carry meaning. Beeblio ranks them using the wordfreq corpus, so the order reflects real Polish as it appears in books, news, and the web.
Knowing this band well enough to read with it means you can follow the grammatical skeleton of almost any Polish sentence, even when individual nouns or adjectives are still unfamiliar. On Beeblio, texts pinned to the First words band highlight everything outside the top 300 so you see exactly what you still need to look up — and what you already own. That targeted feedback makes reading practice far more efficient than working through a textbook word list alone.
A useful milestone: the ~1,500 most frequent Polish words cover roughly 80% of everyday text. Mastering this first band of 300 puts you a firm quarter of the way to that landmark, with the highest-return words already in your pocket.
300 Polish words ranked 1–300 by frequency — the “First words” band. A learner who knows them can read texts pinned to this band with about 95% of the words already familiar.

Questions
Which Polish words actually appear in the 1–300 band?
The band contains the glue of Polish: words like i (and), nie (not), się (reflexive marker), to (this/that), w (in), and the most common forms of verbs like być (to be) and mieć (to have). These are the words you meet in virtually every Polish sentence, regardless of topic.
How does Beeblio use the 1–300 band when I read a text?
When you pin a text to the First words band, Beeblio colour-codes every word by its frequency rank. Words inside the top 300 appear unshaded so you can focus on them as known ground, while rarer words are highlighted in deeper colours to show how far outside this band they fall. This makes it immediately clear which words are pulling the most weight in a sentence.
Is 300 words really enough to start reading real Polish?
On its own, 300 words is not enough to read comfortably — Polish texts will still contain many unfamiliar nouns and adjectives. What this band gives you is control over the grammatical framework of sentences, which makes looking up unknown words much easier because you already understand how the pieces fit together.
