Learn Polish by reading at your level

Polish can feel daunting at first — the cases, the consonant clusters, the sheer unfamiliarity of the script. But reading at the right level is one of the most reliable ways to make progress, and that is exactly what Beeblio is built for. Every word in a Polish text is ranked by how often it appears in real Polish, drawn from the wordfreq corpus, so you can see at a glance which words are everyday essentials and which are rare.

Beeblio organises Polish vocabulary into frequency bands: the first 300 words, then 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000. The roughly 1,500 most frequent Polish words cover about 80% of everyday text, so reading at that band already puts you in contact with the overwhelming majority of words you will meet. Colour-coded highlighting makes it instantly clear where a text sits relative to your current vocabulary.

On this page you will find everything you need to read your way forward in Polish: a level test to pin down your starting point, a difficulty checker for any text you find in the wild, word-frequency lists to study from, and a growing library of graded readings chosen for Polish learners.

Questions

How does Beeblio decide which Polish words are 'common'?

Every Polish word is assigned a frequency rank using the wordfreq corpus, which is built from a wide range of real Polish text. Words are then grouped into bands — 300, 800, 1,500, and so on up to 12,000 — so 'common' has a precise, consistent meaning rather than being a vague label.

What level of Polish do I need before reading with Beeblio is useful?

Beeblio is helpful from the very beginning. Even as a complete beginner you can use the frequency lists to learn the most essential Polish words first, and once you know a few hundred words you can start using the difficulty checker to find texts where you understand enough to follow along and grow.

Can I check whether a Polish text I found online is right for my level?

Yes — paste any Polish text into Beeblio's difficulty checker and it will highlight every word by frequency band, so you can see instantly how much of it falls within your current vocabulary. A good rule of thumb is to look for texts where the vast majority of words sit inside bands you already know.
