Romanian reading level test — 2 minutes, 24 words

This two-minute test gives you a clear, honest picture of your Romanian reading level. You'll see 24 Romanian words drawn from across Beeblio's frequency bands — from the 300 most common words all the way out to the 12,000 most common — and simply mark the ones you know. Because the words are ranked by how often they actually appear in real Romanian text (using the wordfreq corpus), your answers map directly onto the vocabulary size you're working with.

The result tells you which frequency band you can read comfortably: 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, or 12,000 words. That's genuinely useful information. The ~1,500 most frequent Romanian words cover around 80% of everyday text, so if you're around that band, you're already able to follow most articles and stories with only occasional look-ups.

Once you have your band, Beeblio uses it to highlight unfamiliar words as you read real Romanian content — so you always know exactly what to focus on next.

How it works

You see 24 Romanian words, from the most common down to rank 12,000, and say for each whether you know it. Knowing at least two thirds of a band's words passes that band; your level is the highest band passed. No account, two minutes.

The bands

  1. First words — the top 300 words
  2. Getting by — the top 800 words
  3. Everyday — the top 1,500 words
  4. Confident — the top 3,000 words
  5. Fluent reader — the top 5,000 words
  6. Advanced — the top 8,000 words
  7. Near-native — the top 12,000 words

Questions

How accurate is the test with only 24 words?

The 24 words are carefully spread across all of Beeblio's frequency bands, so each one acts as a representative checkpoint. The result won't be as precise as a 200-word vocabulary test, but it gives a reliable enough band to start reading at the right level straight away.

What counts as 'knowing' a word?

Mark a word if you understand its meaning when you read it — you don't need to be able to spell it from memory or use it in a sentence. If you're genuinely unsure, it's better to leave it unmarked; the test is for your benefit, not a grade.

Can I retake the test as my Romanian improves?

Yes, and it's worth doing every few months. As you read more Romanian, your comfortable band will shift upward, and a fresh test will update your Beeblio highlights so they stay focused on the words that are just beyond your current reach.
