Romanian text difficulty checker
Paste any Romanian text here and Beeblio will tell you, word by word, how familiar it is likely to be at your current level. Each word is ranked by frequency using the wordfreq corpus and sorted into bands — 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 most common words — so you can see at a glance whether a newspaper article, a short story, or a song lyric is within reach or still a stretch.
The results show you the percentage of the text covered by each frequency band, a list of words you probably don't know yet (those outside your chosen level), and the rarest words in the passage. As a rough guide, the 1,500 most frequent Romanian words account for around 80% of everyday text, so knowing which band your unknown words fall into helps you decide what to learn next.
Use the checker before you read: if most unfamiliar words sit in the 3,000-word band, a dictionary and some patience may be all you need. If they cluster in the 8,000-word band, the text might be better saved for later — or used as a targeted vocabulary challenge.
How it works
Paste a text in Romanian (up to 6,000 characters). Every word is looked up in a frequency list; for each band — the top 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000 and 12,000 words — you see the share of the text a learner at that band already knows. Comprehensible reading sits around 95–98% known: we call ≥97% easy, 92–97% just right, 85–92% hard, and below that too hard.
You also get the new words worth learning (unknown but common, in frequency order) and the rare words — names, jargon, typos — that no learner should stop for.
Questions
How does Beeblio decide whether a Romanian word is frequent or rare?
Every word is looked up in the wordfreq corpus, a large multilingual dataset built from subtitles, news, and web text. The corpus assigns each word a frequency rank, and Beeblio places it into the nearest band (300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, or 12,000 most common words).
Does the checker handle Romanian word forms correctly, or will it miss inflected words?
Beeblio looks up each word form as it appears in the text, and wordfreq includes inflected Romanian forms — so a verb conjugation or a noun in the plural is ranked on its own frequency, not just matched to a dictionary headword. This means results reflect how often that exact form appears in real Romanian text.
What percentage coverage should I aim for before reading a text comfortably?
Most researchers suggest that understanding around 95–98% of the running words in a text lets you read with reasonable comfort and pick up new words from context. Use Beeblio's band breakdown to check whether the words you don't know are close to your current level or much further beyond it.
