Free language tools: word lists, level test, text difficulty

Learning a language gets a lot easier when you know which words are worth your time. Beeblio's free tools are built around word frequency — the idea that a relatively small core vocabulary covers the vast majority of everyday text. Tackle the most common 1,500 words of a language and you'll be able to read roughly 80% of what you encounter in the wild, from news articles to casual conversations.

On this page you'll find three tools, all free and available for 22 languages. The frequency word lists let you browse or download vocabulary organised into bands of 300, 800, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, 8,000, and 12,000 words, so you always know exactly what to learn next. The level test checks which frequency bands you already know. The text difficulty checker pastes in any passage and shows you how many words fall inside or outside your current vocabulary — helping you find reading material that stretches you without overwhelming you.

All word rankings come from the wordfreq corpus, a large, real-world collection of text. Whether you are just starting out or pushing past the intermediate plateau, these tools give you a clear, data-driven picture of where you stand and what to do next.

Questions

Which languages are supported?

All three tools are available for 22 languages, including Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, Portuguese, and more. You can see the full list when you select a tool and choose your target language.

How are the word frequency rankings calculated?

Rankings come from the wordfreq corpus, a broad dataset drawn from real-world text such as news, books, and the web. Words are ordered by how often they appear across that corpus, so the top of each list genuinely reflects the vocabulary you are most likely to meet when reading or listening.

Do I need an account to use these tools?

No account is needed — all three tools are completely free to use without signing up. If you create a free Beeblio account, you can save your level test results and track your progress over time.
